Fundamentals Art Assignment 7

Textures on paper can be created by repeating different kinds of marks and shapes. Texture in the 3- dimensional world refers to the quality of a surface.

In a 6ÓX 9Ó rectangle create 12 shapes that are not outlined and fill the entire space. The goal of this assignment which is called 12=13 is to somehow unify all the 12 textures to create a unified whole within the 6Ó x 9Ó rectangle that becomes the 13th shape.

In order to do this you must maintain your focus on your work and keep asking yourself how it feels in the same way you did in the 30 boxes assignment. What kind of feelings are you creating with your textures and what kinds of associations do those feelings have and what other textures could I put in to make those feelings stronger?

You must use your intuition for this assignment and your feelings. Keep asking yourself what should I put in next and if you WAIT, it will come to you.

Have fun and see what you can come up with. DonÕt forget to check out the examples pinned up.

Homework: Bring in 4 examples out of magazines. or newspapers of texture made with repeated lines.

                          12 = 13

Goals: To explore different kinds of line repetition to create texture.

To become more aware of line quality and feeling.

To become more aware of the interrelationships in a work of art.

To extend our ability to create a unified whole.

To expand our ability to stay in "contact" with our work as we are doing it.

Create 12 different areas in your 6x9 in. rectangle each being a different type of line. All areas must work together to create an over all composition.

Using closure and a repeated mark you will be creating shapes that will fill the rectangle and create a whole.

Be sure if you overlap that the two areas feel as on and not two separate things.

Just start - do not pre draw  - work for discovery , see what happens. Do not begin in the middle !!

Just like a friendship takes communication and sensitivity to feelings between both parties so does the relationship between you and your artwork need the same thing. If you are only sensitive in the beginning of a relationship and insensitive at the end of it chances are it will not go well. You only get out of something what you put in.

Goals that will be graded:

1. Different. types of line.

2. Different. size of areas.

3. Different. shapes of areas.

4. Areas need to work together.

5. Do not Pre-Plan.

6. Keep in contact with your work (be a friend to your work!)

7. SHOULD DEMONSTRATE THE ABILITY OF SHAPES TO GROUP UP INTO LARGER SHAPES THUS CREATING A NEW DIMENSION AND LEVEL TO YOUR WORK. THIS IS THE WAY AN ARTIST SIMPLIFIES HIS COMPOSITION AND STILL MAINTAINS COMPLEXITY.
